Why Archadeck of West Central & Southwest Ohio is the Dayton & Cincinnati area’s trusted outdoor living space advisor

Have you ever had a vision of what you wanted in an outdoor project but was unable to convey this to the salesperson while researching companies for your project?

Have you ever had a vision of what you wanted in an outdoor project but was unable to convey this to the salesperson while researching companies for your project?

Have you ever had a vision of what you wanted in an outdoor project but was unable to convey this to the salesperson while researching companies for your project?  This recently happened to a couple I encountered attending the Miami Valley Home World Show, looking to add a backyard deck to their home.  My booth was in close proximity where I overheard the conversation this couple had with my competitor’s sales people.  This couple wanted several features included on their proposed deck but the conversation with the sales people went along the lines of “No, you can’t do it that way.  You have to do it THIS (my) way.”  By the time the couple reached my booth, they were tired, confused and frustrated. They were turned off to the fact that they may not even be able to have their project completed as they wanted.

Say “NO” to a one size fits all builder,

As tired and frustrated as this couple was, I encouraged them to communicate the features they had in mind for their anticipated deck.  I listened carefully, to what they wanted and showed them the different options that are available.  They seemed relieved to have someone take their concerns seriously and not try to pigeon-hole their concept into a “one size fits all” mentality.  By truly “listening” to this couple I was able to communicate to them they could choose what options they wanted and a design that best fits their budget.

Witnessing and becoming a part of this couple’s inquiry process really made me understand the difference between a sales person who is interested in only driving their sales and not doing what is in the best interest of the client,  and a trusted advisor.  We at Archadeck of West Central & Southwest Ohio are your trusted outdoor living space advisors, our goal is to bring  your vision and concept to life.

“We appreciate that Archadeck (Tim) listened to our wants and needs and helped design a pergola that met ( in fact exceeded ) our goals. We have rec’d lots of positive feedback from friends/neighbors and we are enjoying the extra outdoor living space. Happy customers !!”
— Ken D. in Waynesville, OH

“Archadeck built our back yard deck. Our first appointment was very productive. Tim brought his portfolio of past projects and asked about personal preferences. He was very respectful of my choices and budget. Our second appointment was just as productive. I went to his show room and was able to view / judge the different products offered. The project started much later than the approximate date I was given; however, once started it was finished in a timely manner. The workers were very professional and knowledgeable. Their work ethic was commendable (showed up on time and worked very hard in inclement weather to get the job done).”

“Let this be the year that Archadeck makes your outdoor living dreams come true.”

Archadeck of West Central and Southwest Ohio asks… Who said you can’t reap the benefits of your beautiful backyard throughout fall and winter?

Fall has arrived! The glory of fall is here and the weather is cooling. Because of this, many homeowners are beginning the process of shutting down their outdoor living spaces. They are covering their patio furniture, preparing their landscapes for the impending dormant season and basically heading indoors until the warm weather of spring emerges. But why? Who said you can’t reap the benefits of your beautiful backyard throughout fall and winter?

If you really want to get more use out of your outdoor living space, Archadeck of West Central and Southwest Ohio can help expand your living space with hardscaping. Hardscaping can be used to create an outdoor room with amenities that rival your indoor space, such as a full outdoor kitchen, built-in seating, and an outdoor fireplace or fire pit. This outdoor space will be perfect for entertaining guests and will allow you to enjoy nature and engage yourself in your landscape rather than just admire it from your window.

patio-firepit-deck-pergola

Decks and patios naturally blend together because of the allure of stone and wood as it mingles.

Outdoor kitchens are fully functional cooking spaces that allow the chef in your family to cook all your meals outdoors without running back and forth to the kitchen. They usually include a grill island, a sink, a small refrigerator, cabinets and a bar for seating and an eating area. One of the best parts about having an outdoor kitchen as part of your outdoor living area, is that not only will you and your guests get to enjoy dinner alfresco but the chef can participate in the festivities while preparing the meal as well.

Outdoor kitchen and patio poolside

When the autumn nights begin to settle in, even though it may be a little chilly, a fire element can warm you right up and give you an excuse to be outside. Whether it’s down time with the family, intimate get-togethers with friends, or a full-blown party, having a fireplace or fire pit adds another dimension to entertaining. Inevitably, it becomes the focal point, and as most who have spent time staring into a blaze will attest, it encourages friendly conversation and warm feelings. Even while relaxing at home in your hot tub or sauna, a fire feature offers a healthy means of de-stressing.

Much like any outdoor living structure or element, an outdoor kitchen or fire feature can be customized to match your tastes and needs. Even with a smaller yard, you can still create an intimate space for gatherings. From the furniture and appliances to the actual fire feature itself, there are plenty of ways you can customize your outdoor space and still reap all of these benefits:

  • Entertainment – nothing says gather a group of friends and family together like freshly prepared food under the stars or s’mores and spooky stories around the fire pit or fireplace
  • Cooking – outdoor cooking is more robust when you use a gas grill, Big Green Egg cooker or wood burning pizza oven in the great outdoors…not to mention all of the culinary creations you can prepare over the open flame of a fire pit or outdoor fireplace
  • Ambiance – even if you aren’t into throwing parties or entertaining, the ambiance a fire feature or warm inviting outdoor kitchen brings is worth the investment alone, especially if you are into star gazing with a loved one while sitting next to one of nature’s most captivating elements
  • Added home value – both an outdoor kitchen and a fire feature are attractive elements that create an enthralling focal point that can really help make your home stand apart from others

The inclusion of an outdoor kitchen or outdoor fire feature, such as a fireplace or fire pit, or even a combination of the two will enhance as well as extend the use of your Miami Valley backyard, allowing you to entertain friends and family for virtual year round outdoor fun, even during the colder months.

banana split

Our Dayton & Cincinnati outdoor living space creations emphasize the difference is in the details!

banana split

Don’t you agree the details make the finished project more delicious?

Like many other things in life, the details can make a tremendous difference in the outcome, and, in your ultimate satisfaction and happiness. Take for example, a simple banana split; the bananas and triple scoops of ice cream certainly are delicious, but would it be as satisfying if you left out the whipped cream and sweet cherry from the top?  Outdoor living space designs, too, play by the same rules. The details of the design make your experience, and how you view the space more fulfilling. Archadeck of West Central and SW Ohio specializes in providing our customers with a detailed customer oriented design while paying attention to the intricate details that provide a true, custom, one-of-a-kind structure.

  • The details of our hardscape designs: When we design a hardscape, such as a patio, retaining wall, outdoor fireplace or even a custom fire pit, we include the “little extras” that make the addition aesthetically appealing and cohesive. For example, when designing an outdoor living combination containing a deck and patio combination. Often, the deck is rectangular or square. In order to “soften” the linear feel of the space, we will design the patio with curved, rounded edges. We also like to add a soldier or sailor course to the outer edge of many of our patios to help define the transition from the patio into the landscape. We will often introduce the use of another color into the border as well. This results in a dramatic impact aesthetically and increases the WOW factor!

  • How we “cope” with the details: When referring to “coping” with the details, we mean it in the literal sense. A little detail we often include in many of our hardscape designs, including fire places, ledges, and pillars is the use of three-dimensional coping to visually enhance our structures. Take a look at what we mean:

  • More details – Not your traditional deck:  The details don’t end with our hardscape designs. As you can clearly see, our custom deck designs often include curved, radius edging, picture framed borders, integrated seating and plants along with other intricate details you just don’t see everyday!

There are thousands of little details that go into designing and building an outdoor living  project – some that you see, and some that you don’t.  But their sum total makes up the look, feel and underlying quality of the project as a whole. There are many details that are standard in our designs – both aesthetic and structural – that come as a result of having built thousands of projects. As you can clearly see, Archadeck of West Central and Southwest Ohio knows the difference in your satisfaction and happiness for years to come lies within the details.

Curves are in when it comes to synthetic decks in the Dayton & Cincinnati area!

Our award winning deck in Spring Valley, OH features a curved, raised area for dining.

Our award-winning deck in Spring Valley, OH features a curved, raised area for dining.

When Archadeck of West Central and Southwest Ohio began building decks and other custom outdoor spaces here in Miami Valley back in 1990, curved detailing was pretty uncommon. Over the years, however, we have watched decking materials and consumer tastes evolve. Part of this evolution includes more clients requesting rounded features on their decks—from radius edging and rounded corners to sweeping borders with matching railing — all of which is focused towards gaining a more elegant backyard setting.

There are a number of reasons why curved deck details are so popular; the first of which is they just look great in almost any setting by adding a unique element to a backyard space. Curved details also serve to break lines since there are no 90-degree angles, no sharp edges, no corners, and of course they flow beautifully, much better than standard square edged decks! (CIrcles obviously flow smoother than squares)

Composite deck builder Cincinnatti and Dayton OH

Beautiful curved composite deck by Archadeck of West Central and SW Ohio.

In order to successfully accommodate “curves” in your deck design is dependent on the nature of the beast, so to speak. This is because the success of decking curves is dependent on the type of material you are using to construct your deck. Although wooden decks which are “bent” to achieve curves may look nice for the 1st year or so after completion, the laws of natures (contraction & expansion) will take its toll. After a “bent” wooden deck is exposed to the elements, over time, it doesn’t react well and will begin to work against the bend. This may seem like a contradiction in terms for many because of the prevalence of curved wood used in furniture. Keep in mind, that curved furniture undergoes a steam compression process in order to successfully accept curve, whereas wooden decking material does not.

Curved integrated bench seating on deck in Central Ohio

Synthetic decking allows Archadeck of West Central and Southwest Ohio to create the big sweeping curves in our unique deck designs more easily than other materials. In addition, the nature of composites and other synthetic decking material will not expand or contract over time which means your curved deck will remain beautiful for the duration. The material is not conducive to tight curving, but delivering large, graceful curved details are one of synthetic’s specialties. Other areas of the deck can also accommodate curved detailing which will aid in complimenting the footprint of your curved deck. These include composite and vinyl railing, aluminum railing, rolled and custom iron railing and even curved integrated bench seating to mimic the lines of your deck!

Keep in mind that a curved deck is not your average deck, not only does a curved deck design require more labor, it also requires more detailing on a structural level too. Typically, the curved portion of a deck is a segment, or arc, of a circle. After making a drawing of the design—easily done on graph paper as well as with CAD—I extend the arc to create a complete circle. There are a number of ways of determining the circle’s diameter mathematically, but my CAD program does that work for me. Once I know the location of the circle’s center and the length of its radius (the distance from the circle’s center to any point on its circumference), I can recreate the arc in full-scale as I frame the deck — and that is just the beginning!

A curved deck may cost a little more up front in design, labor and materials but in the long run it will pay for itself over time in the enjoyment you will gain from being able to enjoy a true work of art each time you venture outdoors. Quality and great workmanship never go out of style!

Are you filled with regret this Memorial Day weekend for not having an outdoor space that measures up?

Memorial Day Weekend in Dayton & Cincinnati OHMemorial Day is a time when we come together to honor our fallen heroes that perished in active military service. It is a time of pride and remembrance. In honor of the occasion, it is common for family and friends to also gather together for the annual “Memorial Day weekend” outdoor activities. To many, the weekend marks the beginning of the outdoor living season. Depending on your traditions, this may include outdoor recreational games, attending a parade, raising a flag, (she should remain at half-mast until noon, as per tradition).enjoying that inaugural dip in the pool, and barbecuing or preparing food outdoors and dining with the ones you hold dear. Among the most favored Memorial Day “cookout” selections include hamburgers & hot dogs, barbecued chicken, beef brisket and grilled seafood.

Deck and gazebo perfect for backyard parties

This outdoor living space is perfect for outdoor celebrations of any kind!

Much like the traditions of Memorial Day weekend that are practiced by most Americans, the backyard deck and/or patio plays a significant role in the festivities as well. Outdoor structures set the stage for outdoor food preparation and dining. They provide a place to relax and engage in conversation. They also provide space for extended entertaining opportunities, especially for large gatherings which you cannot accommodate within your home. Plus, no one wants to be “cooped” up indoors on Memorial Day weekend!  Having the proper outdoor structures in place can quite honestly, make or break the success of how much enjoyment you and your guests get out of your Memorial Day celebration.

If your current outdoor living space is leaving you filled with regret wishing you would’ve upgraded or set the wheels in motion to plan and build a space prior to this weekend’s arrival, all is not lost! There is still time to embark on improving your outdoor living environment prior to the next outdoor celebration you have planned, but now is the time to contact us to ensure you don’t let another opportunity for enjoying those special times with family and friends pass you by.

Another look at how we created the ultimate outdoor environment for entertaining.

At Archadeck of West Central & Southwest Ohio we specialize in designing and building outdoor living environments for the way you and your family want to live outdoors. From classic deck and patio designs, porches and screened porches for added protection and outdoor living spaces that combine varied elements.

Many of today’s up-to-the-moment outdoor living spaces include two or more components to further enhance outdoor living opportunities such as Memorial Day, Father’s Day, Graduation and other special occasions. These can range from deck and patio combinations, deck, patio and porch combinations, and even combinations that include pergolas, fire features and outdoor kitchens.

When we design your ideal backyard retreat we also pay attention to the small things that can add a tremendous amount of function, and beauty, to your outdoor living space. A spacious deck with integrated seating, for example, will allow space for more relaxation. While integrating outdoor lighting into your deck space will add ambiance and extended enjoyment for you and your guests long after the sun goes down. Taking it a step further, we readily design outdoor environments for homeowners throughout Dayton and Cincinnati which include both a deck and patio. Some additional amenities that enliven these combination spaces include outdoor fire features such as fireplaces and fire pits, and even outdoor kitchens! In cases where shade is a concern we often integrate a covered porch or pergola containing a shade enhancement such as a Shade FX canopy. The choices available in our design combinations are endless, and we carefully customize your outdoor living space combination to suit your needs and desires.

What do potato chips and outdoor living structures have in common?

The ultimate backyard room

The ultimate backyard in Xenia, Ohio is also the ultimate outdoor living combination space.

There is no denying the appeal of what is now referred to as the outdoor living space combination. An outdoor living space combination marries the function, and aesthetic elements of two or more outdoor structures to make them function as one large space. You may also see these versatile spaces referred to as “outdoor rooms” as well throughout the media. Archadeck of West Central and Southwest Ohio has watched the popularity of this type of outdoor living environment soar to new heights over the past few years, as homeowners have evolved to transferring all the assets of interior casual living outdoors.

potato chips

Outdoor living spaces are a lot like potato chips: it is difficult to stop at just one.

To try to grasp the concept itself, you only need to step into your home and consider the parts of your home you turn to for relaxing ( the living or family room, of course), entertaining ( the dining room, most likely) and other recreational activities you enjoy ( the living room or playroom.) Now simply, take those areas and think about moving that function outside, and marrying it to provide multiple functions and voilà… you have mastered the concept behind the appeal of the outdoor living combination space!

The only difficult part for homeowners is deciding which structures to marry to gain the most benefits for their individual needs. Quality designed and built outdoor structures are a lot like potato chips… it’s hard to stop with just one! With that in mind, here are some outdoor living combination ideas to consider:

  • The Deck & Patio Combination
This deck, patio and fire pit flow naturally as one outdoor room!

This deck, patio and fire pit flow naturally as one outdoor room!

Decks are the epitome of outdoor living spaces. They are as American as apple pie, and most homeowners begin their outdoor living combinations from the deck and branch out. Decks complement almost every outdoor living structure, from pergolas to patios, decks afford the accompaniment beautifully. Patios in particular, look and function the part when used in a deck and patio combination. This is due to the natural flow created when a deck gently descends into a patio. It opens up and extends your outdoor living space, along with enhancing it. There are more factors at work here than just the added space a deck and patio provide, much more. Decks are generally built from wood or a natural looking “wood toned” synthetic, whereas patios are built from natural stone or hardscape materials that emulate the look and feel of stone. Wood and stone are elements that flow well together. Even in nature, if you look closely you may catch the beauty of a babbling brook laden with stones and hardwoods weeping gently over the bank. Wood and stone just naturally look great when fused together in any setting!

  • The Deck & Porch or Patio & Porch Combination

Deciding on a deck and porch, or patio and porch outdoor living combination is for the homeowner that wants to “have their cake and eat it too.” Decks and patios offer open air outdoor living spaces that are easily complimented by retaining walls, pergolas, spas and even outdoor fire pits. The only drawback to an open air outdoor living space is that in some circumstances, the weather can influence its functionality. By combining an open (covered) porch with a patio or deck, you and your family will have a haven to retreat to when the weather becomes unfavorable, and a shady spot to enjoy on even the most humid of days. Porches can be designed to include a myriad of creature comforts such as ceiling fans, to add even more comfort.

columbus_oh_large_paver_patio_with_screen_porch_and_deck

This outdoor living combination includes a deck, patio and screened porch.

Taking This Concept a Step Farther…

Taking the cues from the deck and porch, or patio and porch combination, homeowners can also extend the protective benefits even farther with a screened porch. Screened porches offer shade and protection from inclement weather while also preventing insects and less dirt and pollen to enter the area. Screened porches can be designed to function similarly to an interior room including sound systems, fans, electrical outlets, outdoor fireplaces and even a spot to mount a television. These nuances open up a world of possibilities within an outdoor living combination.

  • For Your Consideration
Custom fabricated pergola on Spring Valley OH deck

The custom fabricated pergola adds valuable shade to this deck in Spring Valley, OH.

In addition to decks, patios and porches there are many more outdoor living structures that make the grade as part of a successful union. Among these is the pergola. Pergolas are the one structure that blends seamlessly with any outdoor setting. Pergolas can be used as a shade structure much like a covered porch, and can also be used solely as an aesthetic feature to add dimension and character to a space. Pergolas also make a beneficial privacy barrier alongside a spa deck aiding as a buffer from prying eyes.

Outdoor kitchens are also a tasty accompaniment to most any outdoor living space. They can be easily integrated into a deck or patio setting, poolside, or even within an attached or freestanding porch setting. Having the added capability to prepare food outdoors for gatherings, or even intimate dinners, as well as plenty of seating adds to the function of your outdoor space and opens the door to endless entertaining possibilities. Our outdoor kitchen designs often include ranges, refrigerators, warming drawers, and even the Big Green Egg smoker known to many as the ultimate cooking experience!  We can even include serving and food preparation areas providing more seating similar to that of an “eat in” interior kitchen with plenty of counter space to add bar stools for additional seating or to use as an outdoor bar area.
